Wartime software engineer

No recruiters or B2B, please.

We’re Out&Back Outdoor, a startup in the online marketplace for outdoor gear and sustainability. We make buying and selling new and used gear incredibly simple. We've been on television and print news multiple times. We've recently undergone our first acquisition of another company in the space.

We are looking for great frontend engineers. We have a number of internal and external websites that are accessed by customers, business personnel, warehousing personnel, and retail stores that allow us to manage our customer orders, inventory, payments, and returns. They're all written in React. The development and non-development environments are all Dockerized (meaning that nearly the exact same thing you run in your system will run directly in production), and the APIs will already be written. All you will need to do is collaboratively design the websites and code them, and then help us deploy them and support production-issues.

Some of our experiences are configuration driven. That means that we'll do our very best to design them correctly just once, and then be able to support different flavors of the experience without needing to fully redesign them.

The ideal candidate:

  • Pays attention to every requirement
  • Questions and discusses requirements that don't make sense until the design is approved
  • Have a personally-high standard of completeness and quality
  • Supports the assigned tasks until they are deployed, and continues to care that they run well and make sense for the user
  • Pursues anomalies, because anomalies can very often mean that something big might be secretly breaking down
  • Is a kind and generous team member, who thrives with kind and generous people. You do not have to be an extrovert, but just appreciate a team that is more than just the sum of its parts

Job responsibilities:

  • React development
  • Discussing designs and making proposals
  • Possibly reverse-engineering React components in order to figure out why something is not working as expected
  • Creating/customizing components in order to most efficiently meet a requirement
  • Work with API developers to come up with requirements about how data flows to/from the API

Critical development soft-skills:

  • Proficient with Git, branching, and merging
  • Proficient with a code-review process. We use Github.

Job qualifications:

  • A minimum of 5 years of hard/serious React software development experience with demonstrated senior software development experience
  • You're a citizen or otherwise have a legal right to work in the United States without a company-sponsored visa
  • You will be expected to pass a React coding test as part of the interview process
  • Proficient use of Docker and Docker Compose
  • Experience with AWS

What you can expect working at Out&Back:

  • You’d be joining a startup. A true startup environment with all the energy and chaos that comes with it.
  • You’d be joining the outdoor industry. We love the outdoors, outdoor gear and getting outside.
  • Our team is all over the US but our office is in Denver. Daily office visits aren’t mandatory but those of us in Denver do enjoy working on-site.
  • A place where your voice is valued and matters. We’re a small, yet mighty team that works hard, plays hard and moves fast. That means everyone has a seat at the table and delivers value to Out&Back.
  • Flexible Fridays. You choose which half of Friday to work and then stick to it unless there's an emergency (which would not be normal).
  • Competitive benefits. Health, dental and vision insurance. We provide a 401K as well.
  • Employment type
